World War I triggered 100 years ago

The former combatant countries will gather in Sarajevo from 21 to 28 Jun 2014 for events commemorating the centenary of the event that triggered World War I -- the assassination on 28 Jun 1914 of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife by Bosnian Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip.

War was declared on 3 and 4 Aug 2014. The June commemoration, called Sarajevo, Heart of Europe, is aimed at creating a message of peace. It includes a concert by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra on Jun 28, broadcast live from the city, and the release of The Bridges of Sarajevo, a series of short films by European directors that reflect on the changes in Europe over the past century.
