World Social Forum celebrates 10th birthday

January 24, 2010 - BRAZIL

The Greater Porto Alegre 10 Years Social Forum marks the 10th birthday of the World Social Forum. A global entity, it brings together anti-globalization, anti-capitalist and social justice movements to challenge the actions of the ruling elites of nations and corporations that meet each year in Davos, Switzerland. Instead of its usual vast gathering to coincide with the annual Davos forum, the WSF will hold seminar-type events in Brazil in January and similar events around the world during 2010.

The WSF's stated aim is to develop "a permanent world process seeking and building alternatives to neo-liberal policies." The underlying theme for the 2010 events is the global crisis theme, according to the WSF, "understood not just as an economic crisis, but also as an environmental, food, energy, civilization and humanitarian crisis." The birthday theme is: '10 years later: challenges and proposals for another world possible.'; Among the confirmed names for the January event are Boaventura de Souza Santos (Portugal), David Harvey (USA), Francisco Whitaker (Brazil), João Pedro Stédile (Brazil), Diana Senghor (Senegal), Immanuel Wallerstein (USA), Samir Amin (Egypt), Christophe Aguitton (France) e Virgíina Vargas (Peru). The WSF groups set out to challenge the World Trade Organization and what it describes as the WTO's corporate-controlled relatives — the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, and G-8 (now G-20), an association of the richest countries in the world — by holding massive protests whenever and wherever those groups met. Related events will be held in the Porto Allegre area: 22-29 Jan, in Santa Maria and Canoas, the 1st Social Forum and the 1st Solidary Economy World Fair; and 26-28 Jan in São Leopoldo, the World Forum on Theology and Liberation.
