UNITED STATES 31 May 2013 Airline plans to resume 787 Dreamliner service

Aircraft maker Boeing's troubles over its 787 Dreamliner may be close to ending. United Airlines, the only United States carrier with the 787 Dreamliner in its fleet, is confident enough the Federal Aviation Administration will declare the jet safe after ongoing tests that it has announced plans to resume service at the end of May on its flight between Houston and Denver.

Qatar Airways, with five Dreamliners, could be even quicker off the mark once the FAA "all clear" comes, with a first flight of the Boeing plane before the end of April. The long-awaited advanced, fuel-efficient jet was grounded on Jan 16 because of electrical failures on a Japan Airlines plane. Boeing thinks it has found a fix with upgrades to the jet's lithium-ion batteries.

Qatar Airways - and Boeing - have a great deal riding on the regulators' certification. According to Reuters, The fast-growing airline has 30 firm orders for Dreamliners, with an option to buy 30 more.

The Bloomberg news agency notes that the next step in the United plan is a Denver to Tokyo service on Jun 10, and between Houston and Heathrow in London on the same day. (WRITTEN APR 2013)
