Turkey is the 2016 partner country for Gamescom, the vast annual trade fair at the Exhibition Centre in Cologne for the computer and video game industry. The partnership is aimed at building on the commercial prospects of a country with a very young population and a growing gaming culture.
Product launches and the competition for the best games in some 17 categories are a major draw for visitors, and the organisers hope to break 2015 attendance records.
Star Wars Battlefront was the big winner at the 2015 Gamescom Awards. Its five wins included Best of Gamescom.
In 2015 some 345,000 visitors from 96 countries attended the event, with 806 companies from 45 countries represented.
As quoted on the Gamescom website, the organisers see the Turkish game market as offering "enormous development and growth potential" and report that the Turkish game development industry doubled its size in 2015. The growth is described as an important step for raising international awareness of Turkish prospects in the industry.
