The European Party of Socialists (PES) convenes its Elections Congress in Rome 28 Feb-1 Mar 2014 to vote on the Fundamental Programme which defines its priorities, and to elect the PES candidate for the job of President of the European Commission.
The most powerful officeholder in the European Union, he or she will be elected in May to replace José Manuel Barroso.
Martin Schulz was nominated by his own party, the German Social Democrats (SPD), and is expected to be the PES nominee. PES brings together the Socialist, Social Democratic and Labour Parties of the European Union and is seeking to reverse the right-leaning trend in Europe.
