Space observatory launched to monitor solar winds and space weather

February 8, 2015 - UNITED STATES

The Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) is launched from Cape Canaveral in Florida onboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. DSCOVR, a joint project of NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the US Air Force, will be positioned 1,500,000 kilometres from Earth to provide early warning of coronal mass ejections, massive bursts of solar wind similar to the Aurora Borealis.
