The biggest order of business on the agenda at the 2014 National Rifle Association Annual Meeting and Exhibits in Indianapolis, Indiana, from 24-27 Apr 2014, will be vetting the candidates in the Nov 2014 US mid-term election; gun-friendly candidates can anticipate generous NRA campaign funding.
A shooting rampage at Fort Hood, Texas, on the second day of the same month as the meeting is likely to do no more than notch up membership of the politically powerful organization. Citing NRA figures, the Huffington Post observed in its report of the April shooting - the third in six months at a US military base and the fourth since a 2009 mass shooting at Fort Hood -- that after every instance of horrific violence involving guns, including the shooting on 12 Dec 2012 at the Sandy Hook elementary school, membership in the gun-rights organization increases.
Mass shootings always prompt calls for new gun control legislation. An order of business at the 2014 convention will be rallying supporters to ensure prospective gun control bills are stillborn.
