Giuseppe Verdi, one of the most influential composers of the 19th Century, was born 10 Oct 1813 (some sources say Oct 9) in the village of Le Roncole in Italy. Britain's Guardian describes Verdi as a popular showman who delivered compelling stories and dramatic coups. In Italy, according to the newspaper, Verdi will be served up at every opportunity, with new productions of La Traviata, Falstaff, Nabucco, Oberto, Macbeth and Un Ballo in Maschera mounted at Milan's Teatro alla Scala, and with big celebrations at Verona and Parma.

The newspaper notes that Verdi, along with Richard Wagner, whose bicentenary also falls in 2013, brought opera forward from the classical world of Mozart into the future and the 20th century.

According to Encyclopedia Britannica, some Verdi themes have taken root in popular culture - such as "La donna è mobile" from Rigoletto, "Va, pensiero" (The Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves) from Nabucco, "Libiamo ne' lieti calici" (The Drinking Song) from La traviata and the "Grand March" from Aida.

Verdi died on 27 Jan 1901.
