Wimbledon — Andy Murray defends his title

June 23, 2014 - UNITED KINGDOM

Andy Murray will be defending his men's single title at the 2014 Wimbledon Championship from 23 Jun to 6 Jul.

He created a national high for Britons in 2013 when he brought the men's singles title back home -- Britain hadn't had a male winner on its home turf since 1936. The women's title doesn't have a current defender: shortly after winning the 2013 Wimbledon women's singles title, Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli announced her retirement from tennis. The side attraction is the massive construction and face-lifting project under way at the premier tennis championship venue. The All England Club's 2020 Masterplan includes a retractable roof over Court 1 so that play will never again be stopped by the vagaries of English weather. It also calls for demolition of some older courts to make way for new courts -- and for digging; underground is the only option to create additional facilities as Wimbledon, in southwest London, is too densely populated for outward expansion.
