(TBC) If the requisite permits and sponsors are secured, a Million Kids March on Washington Mall will be organized for 17 Feb in the capital to press for safe schools across America. And if emotions are still running high over the mass killings at the Sandy Hook elementary school in December, the demonstration is likely to bring great numbers of children and parents to the capital. WASHINGTON DC **17 Feb 2013 Hopes for Million Kids March on Washington
Concerns have been raised about the potential emotional impact of the march on participating children.

At the school in Newton, Connecticut, on Dec 14 a shooting spree by 20-year-old Adam Lanza left 28 people dead - his mother, 20 children, six school staff and himself.

Communities and advocacy groups across the country have mobilized in favor of stricter gun control since the shooting, and there are several groups trying to mobilize support for demonstrations.

As reported by the Huffington Post, the prime organizer of the Washington march is father-of-two, David Bennahum. He has assembled a team, set up a web site and is soliciting support for the project. The report notes that the march could be healing, but also that some mental health experts questioned involving children in political activism, particularly after a traumatic event like the Newtown shooting. One described it as a potential educational and moving experience, but also potentially threatening and confusing for children.

In the report, Rose Alvarez-Salvat, a pediatric psychologist at Miami Children's Hospital, cautioned that children or teens with anxiety problems or pre-existing mental health issues that impact their daily functioning should not attend the march. (WRITTEN DEC 2012)
