VATICAN 20 Oct 2013 Pope Benedict XVI canonizes record number of Catholics

(DATE TBC) Pope Benedict XVI is due to break a record -- and break his predecessor's record -- when he canonizes 802 Catholics in the same ceremony in October. Eight hundred of the men and women who will be made saints were martyred for their faith in Italy in 1480. The other two are women. Mother Laura is Colombia's first native-born saint. Blessed Mother Maria Guadalupe is a Medican nun. John Paul II, has been passed over for 2013, but his sainthood is nearer. Short cuts are helping to speed the process.

According to the National Catholic Reporter in Feb 2011, John Paul's tally was 482, He presided over more beatifications (1,338) and canonizations (482) than all previous popes combined. His successor, Benedict XVI, will bring his tally up to some 847 at the Oct 2013 canonization ceremony.

The 800 martyrs, led by Blessed Antonio Primaldo, were killed by Ottoman soldiers in the southern Italian coastal town of Otranto in 1480. Their skulls line the walls of Otranto Cathedral.

Blessed Mother Laura Montoya was born in 1874. She founded the Missionary Sisters of Immaculate Mary and of St. Catherine of Siena, to work among the indigenous peoples of Colombia. She died in 1949 and was beatified in 2004.

Blessed Mother Lupita Garcia Zavala, also known as Mother Maria Guadalupe, was the Mexican co-founder of the Congregation of the Servants of St. Margaret Mary and the Poor. She lived from 1878 to 1963.

John Paul II was beatified on 1 May 2011. He was declared "blessed," meaning that he is able to be venerated publicly. Giving in to the pressure, his successor set his path to sainthood on the fast track, waiving the usual five-year wait before starting. An estimated 1.5 million people turned out at the Vatican for the beatification ceremony, according to Italian authorities.(WRITTEN JAN 2013)
