On Sep 24, a week after Sosa was extradited from Canada to the United States, the US District Court in Riverside, California, ordered Sosa to be held without bond until the trial. If convicted, after servicing his sentence in the United States, Sosa might be sent to Guatemala to face massacre-related charges there.
ProPublica notes that the case that has resulted in landmark human rights prosecutions in Guatemala and the United States. According to the publication, Sosa is the highest-ranking officer to have been arrested on charges alleging direct involvement in the massacre by a 20-man unit of elite commandos in the northern Guatemalan farming hamlet of Dos Erres.

According to a Reuters report, Sosa has been accused of taking part in the Guatemalan civil war massacre at Dos Erres, a farming village where 250 men, women and children were brutally slain by military commandos in 1982. The newswire also notes that US prosecutors have not charged Sosa in connection with the killings, considered one of the worst atrocities in that country's bloody, 36-year civil war.
