UNITED STATES 24 Jan 2012 Panel announces short lists for Oscars

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce, live, the nominees for the 25 categories of its annual awards, the Oscars, in February. The Academy, which changes rules for selection, the categories and the awards ceremony from time to time, made a new round of changes In June. The number of Best Picture nominees will now float instead of being limited to five or to 10, the most recent change. And the rules for two other awards have changed.

Only members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences may nominate and vote for Oscar candidates. The academy is divided into various branches of film production, and the nominees in each award category are chosen by the members of the corresponding branch. The entire academy membership nominates the candidates for Best Picture and votes to determine the winners in most of the categories. The new rules will require that a nominee for Best Picture must receive at least 5 per cent of first place votes. They stipulate that the number of nominated pictures will produce anywhere from five to 10 nominees.

The academy has revised the number of Best Animated Feature nominees on a sliding scale, depending upon the number of eligible animated features released during the year. The Visual Effects category will also expand its short-list from seven to 10.

To be eligible for an award in a given year, according to Encyclopedia Britannica, a film must be publicly exhibited for at least one week at a commercial theatre in the Los Angeles area between Jan 1 and midnight of Dec 31 of that year. Foreign-language films are one of the exceptions to the rule.

The gold-plated Oscar is presented for: best picture, actor, actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, directing, original screenplay, adapted screenplay, cinematography, art direction and set decoration, editing, original musical or comedy score, original dramatic score, original song, costume design, makeup, sound, sound effects editing, visual effects, foreign-language film, animated feature film, animated short, live-action short, documentary feature, and documentary short. In a few select categories (e.g., makeup, sound editing) awards may not be given every year. The academy also presents scientific and technical awards, special achievement awards, honorary awards, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award (for excellence in producing), and the Gordon E. Sawyer Award (for technological contributions), although these are not necessarily awarded annually. (WRITTEN Jun 2011)
