UNITED STATES 21 Apr 2012 Seattle's iconic Space Needle turns 50

The 605-foot tall Space Needle, the symbol of the city of Seattle, was opened on 21 Apr 1962, the first day of the World's Fair in that city. With its hourglass tower and top resembling a flying saucer, the design reflected the theme of the fair -- Century 21. The celebrations include a contest -- Space Race 2012 -- for a seat aboard G-Force One for a Zero Gravity experience. The organizers expect millions of entries. Moon-visiting astronaut Buzz Aldren will announce the winner.

The entry form and requirements are on the Space Race 2012 web page. The finalist/s will have to go through fitness testing.

Other notables on hand for the celebrations include Richard Garriot, the first tourist to the International Space Station, and Eric Anderson, chairman of Space Adventures, a Virginia-based private space travel company. Anderson's company has sent seven people to space, hitching rides on Russian rockets. Garriott, a computer engineer who has invested in private space travel, spent 12 days circling Earth.

The Space Needle organizers have called for the public to submit personal favorite stories about the icon and photos and videos for prizes.

The Space Needle was in the midst of a space race with the Soviet Union when it was built. The tallest building west of the Mississippi River at that time, it hosted over 2.3 million visitors during the Fair. Forty years later, it is Seattle's number one tourist destination. (WRITTEN Oct 2011)
