UNITED STATES 20 Oct 2012 Pro-life organization rallies nationwide against mandate
Supporters of the pro-life Stand Up for Religious Freedom organization plan rallies at over 100 locations around the United States on Oct 20. UNITED STATES 20 Oct 2012 Pro-life organization rallies nationwide against mandate
Supporters of the pro-life Stand Up for Religious Freedom organization plan rallies at over 100 locations around the United States on Oct 20. They are protesting a federal policy, referred to as the HHS Mandate, that requires nearly all private health insurance plans to include coverage for approved prescription contraceptive drugs and devices, surgical sterilizations and abortion-inducing drugs - all part of the Affordable Care Act passed in 2010. Leading the protest, the Catholic Church frames the mandate as a threat against religious liberties. The rallies will double as a "get out the vote" for pro-life candidates Nov 6 United States election.

According to the organization, the HHS Mandate provides an exemption for "religious employers" who may object to contraception, sterilizations and abortion-inducing drugs, but this exemption is so narrow that it fails to cover the vast majority of faith-based organizations, including Catholic hospitals, universities, and service organizations that help millions every year. The organization maintains that religious employers are exempt only if their purpose is to inculcate religious doctrine, they hire and serve exclusively people of their own faith, and they qualify as a church or religious order according to a very narrow definition in the tax code.

The October rally is the third in 2012 against the mandate. The others were in March and June. (WRITTEN SEP 2012)
