UNITED STATES 19-29 Jan 2012 Founder center stage at Sundance Film Festival

At the 2012 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, Hollywood veteran Robert Redford will again have center stage at the festival he founded, with the news focus on a recent environmental pursuit and his new film. An activist as well as an actor and film director, he has created a stir with his campaign against the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada through America's heartland. With that battle won temporarily, he is focusing on the controversial development of Canada's oil sands.

In a column published today in the Globe and Mail newspaper, Redford denounces the oils ands development near Fort McMurray in Canada and called on Canadians to join him in his effort to shut down the project. He has urged Canadians and Americans alike to reduce their oil consumption, speak out against the oil sands and maintain their resistance to TransCanada Corp.'s Keystone XL pipeline, a controversial effort to ship 700,000 barrels of bitumen daily from northern Alberta to refineries on the Gulf Coast. Under siege from critics, the United States State Department has ordered a review of the project.

Redford is directing and acting in the feature film, The Company You Keep. It is described as a thriller about a violent 1960s US political activist on the run from a journalist who has discovered his new identity. Stanley Tucci, Shia LaBoeuf, Susan Sarandon, Anna Kendrick, Nick Nolte and Chris Cooper also star in the movie.

Redford, who, belying his pistol-packing image is an outspoken gun control advocate, won an Oscar in 1980 for his film "Ordinary People." He has also starred in more than 40 films including "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" and "The Sting."

The festival films will be screened in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Sundance in Utah for some 50,000 attendees. Up to two hundred films will be selected from more than 9,000 submissions. (WRITTEN Nov 2011)
