For the first time, music fans will help to decide which five artists will be inducted in 2013 in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. For the first time, music fans will help to decide which five artists will be inducted in 2013 in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Previously, a committee of some 600 music industry luminaries made the decision. The fans' ballots for the top five artists will be combined with committee ballots to decide who will be honored at the Los Angeles, California, ceremony. Fans have until Dec 5 to vote. The candidates include Rush, a Canadian trio, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, the late Donna Summer, Chic, Albert King, Deep Purple, Kraftwerk, Heart, the Marvelettes, the Meters, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Procol Harum and Randy Newman, and N.W.A. and Public Enemy, both hip hop acts. Rush fans have been pressing for the Canadians' induction for years.

The Hall of Fame was founded to recognize outstanding achievements and contributions to the world of rock music. To be eligible for nomination, a band must have released its first single or album at least 25 years before the year of nomination. This year, that meant the band's first recording was no later than 1987.

The Los Angeles Times reports that 13 years after Rush became eligible and 44 years after the group formed, it is finally in the running. The Rush petitioners point out that the trio has 22 consecutive gold records, and is fourth behind the Beatles, Stones, and Kiss in all-time gold records for a band. Fourteen of those albums have gone platinum. They also say that Rush's lineup has remained unchanged since their first major tour in 1974.

Reuters notes that for singer Donna Summers and Jon Lord, the keyboardist co-founder of British heavy metal rockers Deep Purple, induction would be posthumous. Both died in 2012. The British band released 18 studio albums over their career spanning six decades. (WRITTEN OCT 2012)
