The 38 plays of Shakespeare will be performed in global lantuages for a cultural festival marking the XXX Olympiad in July and the Paralympics in September. The season begins at the Shakespeare Globe on Apr 23, the bard's birthday. The full arts program begins on Jun 21. The performances include the Taming Of The Shrew in Urdu, King Lear in Australian Aboriginal languages, Julius Caesar in Italian, Troilus And Cressida in Maori, The Tempest in Arabic and Love's Labour's Lost in sign language.

Shakespeare's plays have been translated into every major living language and there is a long tradition of his performances around the world in people's own vernacular, according to Shakespeare Globe Artistic Director Dominic Dromgoole. In an Official London Theatre newsletter, he describes the project as "slightly bananas" in its ambition. The Globe itself will produce one of the plays. International theater companies will present the others.

The project is part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, which was set up in 2008 to celebrate the Olympics. Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, Gorillaz mastermind Damon Albarn and pop artist David Hockney are among the star performers during the 2012 season.

Productions and events for the arts festival will take place across Britain, in London, Stratford-upon-Avon, Newcastle/Gateshead, Wales and Scotland, and also online.

The arts project includes a celebration of the works of disabled artists. (WRITTEN Jan 2011)
