Thomas Edward Lawrence was born on 16 August 1888 in Wales. A talented linguist, writer and army officer, Lawrence is best remembered for his role in the Arab Revolt during Britain's battles against the Ottoman Empire in World War I, when his advice on nation-building in a period of Arab revolution appears evermore pertinent today.

Lawrence shot to fame in August 1917, following the astonishing capture of Aqaba. Using Arab insurgents to harass the Turks, Lawrence recorded his exploits and thoughts on the West's interests in the Middle East. A century ahead of his time, the young officer realized that without the political backing of the Arab population any and all nation-building efforts, especially those which paid little more than lip service of making locals the main stakeholders, were doomed.

In his epic work, Seven Pillars of Wisdom, Lawrence described his personal feelings too; especially his bitterness when success was undone by the governments of France and Britain on the signing of the Balfour declaration and the Sykes-Picot agreement, which allowed for the creation of a Jewish state in Palestine and the sharing of power in Arabia between London and Paris.

In his life time, Lawrence's fame resulted in part through reports of his exploits by American journalist Lowell Thomas as well as Lawrence's own account of the Arab Revolt and his prolific letter writing. However, the 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia has since enhanced his reputation while actor Robert Pattinson will again take on the role this summer.

Events to commemorate Lawrence's birth this August include artist David Williams-Ellis's new sculpture of Lawrence - a larger-than-life bronze statue to go on display at Snowdon Lodge near the village of Tremadog. (WRITTEN BY NEWSAHEAD CORRESPONDENT LAWRENCE SMALLMAN APR 2013)
