Top-ranking military officer on trial for murders

April 29, 2010 - CANADA

Colonel Russell Williams

, the commander of Canada's largest Air Force base until he was charged in February with the murder of two women and the sexual assault of two others, appears in court in Belleville, Ontario, on Apr 29. He is charged with the first-degree murder of Jessica Lloyd, 27, and Marie Comeau, a 38-year-old corporal under his command. According to one report, the charges against Williams have left Canada's military in a state of shock. Two previous court appearances have been by video link. Russel was appointed as the base commander of Canadian Forces Base Trenton in Trenton, Ontario, in Jul 2009. Comeau was found dead in her home in November. She was a flight attendant at CFB Trenton and served aboard the same military VIP flights Williams piloted for much of the 1990s, ferrying dignitaries on domestic and overseas trips. The body of Lloyd, previously reported missing, was found in February. (Written Mar 2010)
