The Magnificent Seven of 2016, a remake of the popular 1960 classic Western, arrives in theaters 44 years after the last of four forgettable sequels. Director Antoine Fuqua has put together a star-studded cast to lure a new generation of fans.
The original was based on the Akira Kurosawa movie, The Seven Samurai, and the basic plot survived the transfer intact - an oppressed Mexican peasant village assembles seven gunfighters to help defend their homes. It starred mega stars of their day - Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen and Charles Bronson.
The new version's theme doesn't stray far: a woman hires a disparate group of gunslingers to protect her town from rampaging bandits that are led by a robber baron. It stars Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Onofrio, Wagner Moura, Haley Bennett, Peter Sarsgaard and Matt Bomer.
The first sequel, Return Of The Seven, came out six years after the first movie, and brought back Yul Brynner in the role of ringleader Chris Adams. Guns Of The Magnificent Seven, with George Kennedy taking over Brynner's role, came three years later. The Magnificent Seven Ride! Was the last in the series. It earned one star from the critics!
