THE HAGUE 28 Aug - 21 Sep 2013 Peace Palace marks centenary

The Peace Palace, built with funds from American industrialist Andrew Carnegie, opened on 28 Aug 1913. The Carnegie Foundation, the Municipality of The Hague and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are organizing festivities that run from the actual birthday until Sep 21, the United Nations International Day of Peace. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and a few world leaders can be expected for the birthday party, and tens of thousands of international visitors can be expected for the Peace Run and the Peace Concert on Sep 21. The centenary year saw the groundbreaking, on 16 Apr, for the new International Criminal Court, often referred to as the Peace Palace for the 21st Century. The new building enhances the centuries-old reputation of The Hague as the world capital of peace and justice.

Owned by the Dutch Carnegie Foundation, the neo-Renaissance palace is often called the seat of international law because it houses the International Court of Justice (the principal judicial body of the United Nations), the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the Hague Academy of International Law and the Peace Palace Library.

The Peace Run on Sep 21 is a one-time running event open to runners of all ages and abilities. The course takes runners around the Peace Palace. A huge Peace Concert, organized by the Peace One Day organization and hosted by actor and director Jude Law, will be held in the Peace Palace gardens. Other events include a BBC World Debate on the theme of the commemoration -- Peace & Justice

The palace crew from Carnegie's vision that international peace could be created through international law. The Permanent Court of International Justice was set up in the Peace Palace in 1922, to be succeeded by the International Court of Justice in 1946 on formation of the United Nations. The special tribunals that form part of the International Court of Justice, such as the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, are housed at other locations in The Hague due to lack of space.

The centenary organizers note that the Peace Palace exceeds Carnegie's dreams since disputes between nations are settled in The Hague, and government leaders can be brought to trial at the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.

The new International Criminal Court building will be the first permanent premises of the institution, which turned 10 in 2012 with 122 member countries. It was set up to help end impunity for the perpetrators of the most serious crimes of concern to the international community. (WRITTEN APR 2013)
