Swiss voters to decide whether to pull the plug on nuclear power

November 27, 2016 - SWITZERLAND

Switzerland votes on a Green Party proposal to halt the construction of new nuclear power stations and shut down three existing ones next year. The Swiss government fully supports the exit from nuclear energy but opposes the popular initiative as premature, saying it would leave the country unable to replace power output with energy from renewable sources.

In 2011 Switzerland became the first European country to announce plans to phase out nuclear power, in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan.
