SPAIN **24 Oct 2012 Asturias Awards -- Spain's equivalent of Nobel prizes - presented
Prince Filipe of Asturias presents eight 2012 Prince of Asturias awards at a ceremony in Oviedo in October. Shigeru Miyamoto, considered the father of the modern video game, American author Philip Roth and the Red Cross are among the winners. There were 188 nominees from 48 countries for the 2012 prizes. Winners receive a EUR 50,000 prize and a reproduction of a statuette designed by Joan Miró.

Miyamoto is the author of the Mario Bros. series, which has become one of the most marketed video games in history. According to the Oviedo-based Prince of Asturias Foundation, he won the Award for Communication and Humanities for converting ""the video game into a social revolution and has managed to popularize it among a sector of the population that had not previously accessed this kind of entertainment, while also making it a medium capable of bringing people together regardless of sex, age or social or cultural status."

Roth won the Literature Award, beating 23 other contenders from around the world. Roth is also the recipient of the Man Booker International prize, the Pulitzer and the National Book award. Past Asturias literature awards include Günter Grass, Margaret Atwood, Paul Auster, and, in 2011, the Canadian singer and poet Leonard Cohen.

The international Red Cross Red Crescent Movement received the International Cooperation Award, conferred on individuals or groups who make "a significant international contribution in health, education, environmental protection and social or economic development."

Spanish architect Rafael Moneo won the Arts Award. The 32nd laureate, Rafael Moneo is the fifth architect to receive the award, following Oscar Niemeyer in 1989, Santiago Calatrava in 1999, Franciscco Javier Sáenz de Oíza in 1993 and Lord Norman Foster in 2009.

Martha C. Nussbaum, the Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics in the Law School, Philosophy Department and Divinity School at the University of Chicago has received the Social Sciences Award for work that "constitutes a significant contribution to the benefit of Mankind." She was chosen for her ethical conception of economic development," according to the Foundation.

Biochemist Sir Gregory Winter and Research Chemist Richard A. Lerner have jointly won the Scientific and Technical Research Award. Winter is one of the pioneers of protein engineering, with most of the current therapeutic antibodies in use developed using his methods. Humira is a billion-euro a year blockbuster drug developed by his Cambridge Antibody Technology lab. Lerner, of the Scripps Research Institute in California, won for his studies of the immune system.

The Foundation will announce the winners of the Sports and Concord awards later.

Recent laureates include the Chinese archeological team at the Museum of Terracotta Warriors and Horses in Xi'an; a French-Lebanese author honored for portraying Mediterranean culture as a symbolic space of coexistence and tolerance; three scientists - two Americans and an Israeli - for pioneering pain research; an American sculptor; two noted European thinkers; and organ transplant specialists.
