The celebratory 50th Paris Air Show might be able to boast the first showing of the A350, the Airbus answer to Boeing's innovative 787 Dreamliner. PARIS 17-23 Jun 2013 A350 the star of the 50th Paris Air Show?

The celebratory 50th Paris Air Show might be able to boast the first showing of the A350, the Airbus answer to Boeing's innovative 787 Dreamliner. It all depends if the maker can get it off the production line in time for the short journey to Le Bourget. And it might not have to share any limelight with the Dreamliner. The 787 fleet has been grounded around the world pending an investigation into a battery problem. Interest has been high in both advanced lightweight planes because they promise significant fuel efficiency. Military aircraft could be taking the back seat at the 50th show. The makers are feeling the pinch because of military budget-cutting on both sides of the Atlantic.

If the Dreamliner isn't around, Airbus will be primed to trounce Boeing in sales of civilian aircraft at a second consecutive Paris Air Show.

The first flyable version of the A350 rolled out of its Toulouse, France, assembly building in December. Like the Dreamliner, which uses composite materials instead of metals, the A350 has suffered production delays.

In 2011 at the Paris Air Show, which alternates annually with Farnborough International Airshow as the aviation industry's foremost event, Airbus blew past all expectations when it announced sales deals for nearly 700 single-aisle A320neos. "Neo" stands for "New Engine Option."

In 2012 at Farnborough, the Dreamliner stole the show.

The A350 was originally conceived as a variant of the A330 with few changes, to compete with the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and the larger Boeing 777.

The Federal Aviation Administration and other agencies around the world moved to ground the worldwide fleet of 50 787s on Jan. 16 after a smoldering lithium-ion battery aboard an All Nippon Airways flight forced an emergency landing. The Boston battery fire Jan. 7 occurred on a Japan Airlines plane.

In cost-cutting move because of military budget cuts in the United States, a prime Pentagon defense contractors, Northrop Grumman, is exhibiting at the Paris show. It bypassed participation in the Farnborough International Air Show in 2012 for the same reason. Lockheed Martin, the Pentagon's largest contractor, which is also in cost-cutting mode, plans to cut back its presence at the 2013 show, but has stated it will participate.
