Original hosts Morocco barred from African Cup of Football Nations

January 17, 2015 - EQUITORIAL GUINEA

The African Cup of Nations will be hosted in Equitorial Guinea, replacing Morocco unable to host the tournament because of fears of the spread of the deadly virus Ebola.

As a result of their refusal to host the tournament Morocco has been thrown out of the competition. This is because they only qualified through hosting the event as they did not compete in the tournament pre- qualifying games.

Meanwhile the new hosts, the Spanish speaking nation Equatorial Guinea, were initially disqualified from the preliminary rounds of the tournament due to fielding an ineligible player.

However the Confederation of African Football decided on the new hosts after a meeting between the Equatorial Guinea president Teodoro Obiang and CAF president Issa Hayatou.

The 16 team tournament will still take place between the 17th January and the 8th February with matches being held at venues in Bata, Ebebiyin, Mongomo and capital city Malabo. The previous holders Nigeria has failed time qualify this time round meaning a new champion will be crowned.
