Oprah Winfrey auctions memorabilia to fund academy for South African girls

Talk show host and media magnate Oprah Winfrey auctions furniture, paintings and memorabilia from her Chicago apartment to fund her education academy for girls in South Africa. The 61-year-old is estimated by Forbes magazine to be worth US $3 billion.

The 571 lots in the Chicago sale are mostly from her downtown condominium.

The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls is a boarding school for about 380 girls, south of Johannesburg. It was founded by the television mega-star in in January 2007. It provides opportunities to academically gifted girls who have exhibited leadership qualities.
