The series feature a hologram of Europa, a mythological princess symbolizing the origins of Europe. The first in the series was a 5-euro banknote issued on 2 May 2013. The other banknotes in the series will be introduced gradually over several years, in ascending order. The denominations - €5, €10, €20, €50, €100, €200 and €500 - will remain unchanged. New security features will make the bills harder to counterfeit. Introduced in 2002, the euro is now the common currency of 18 states and 334 million people.
