LONDON 29 Jun 2013 Globe Theater burned down 400 years ago
The reconstructed Globe was in the news in 2011 when a team of actors read the King James Bible from cover to cover on stage as part of the 400th anniversary of its publication. The first reading -- Genesis and Exodus - was on Palm Sunday, Apr 17.

It is unlikely there will be special performances or events marking the destruction of the Globe by fire. The 400th anniversary of the death of the Bard of Avon - on 23 Apr 2016 - are likely to be lavish and begin in 2015.

The conflagration anniversary represents a useful point for reviewing the history of the theater. It was built in 1599 by Shakespeare's playing company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men. Archaeologists in London discovered and began unearthing in 2012 the remains of an earlier playhouse, north of the river Thames in Shoreditch, used by Lord Chamberlain's Men before the riverside Globe theater was built.

After the fire, a second Globe Theatre was built on the same site, but it closed in 1642. A modern reconstruction of the Globe, named Shakespeare's Globe, opened in 1997 approximately 750 feet from the site of the original theatre.

The Globe was the first to be built specifically for an existing acting company and financed by the company itself. Shakespeare wrote at least 14 plays for performance there. (WRITTEN JUNE 2012)
