Belfast-born scholar, theologian and author CS Lewis died 50 years ago on Nov 22. The 115th anniversary of his birth and the 50th anniversary of his death fall in the same month. He will be honored on Nov 22 with a commemorative service at Westminster Abbey and memorial stone in the Poets' Corner. Lewis will join greats of English literature, who include John Keats, Lewis Carrol, William Blake and TS Eliot, in the Poets' Corner, an abbey tradition going back 600 years. The author of 40 books, he is best known for The Chronicles of Narnia, a series of seven children's books that have become classics of fantasy literature.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the first installment in the saga, was published in 1950

Lewis lapsed into atheism in his teens but returned to Christianity in the 1930s. His fiction is often read as allegory for biblical themes, and some of his renown stems from lectures explaining his spiritual beliefs. His book Mere Christianity was adapted from his series of BBC radio broadcasts. It seeks to explain the fundamental Christian teachings to a general audience.

Clive Staples Lewis was born in Belfast on 29 Nov 1898. He graduated from Oxford University with a focus on literature and classic philosophy, and in 1925 was awarded a fellowship teaching position at Magdalen College at Oxford. His associates included J.R.R. Tolkien, another celebrated author with a taste for fantasy worlds and mythical creatures.

Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia has seen a number of on-screen iterations, according to Encyclopedia Britannica, which include a cartoon version of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe that was released in 1979 and a 1989 BBC film series. Additionally, in 2005, FOX released a big-screen adaptation of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. Lewis's relationship with his wife Joy has also been depicted in Shadowlands, presented as a play and two films. One of the film versions was directed by Richard Attenborough and starred Anthony Hopkins as Lewis. (WRITTEN JAN 2013)
