Greek election could trigger fresh eurozone crisis

January 25, 2015 - GREECE

A snap general election sees the far-left Syriza party -- which wants to renegotiate Greece's international bailout deal and write off a large part of its debt -- holding a slim lead over Prime Minister Antonis Samaras's liberal-conservative New Democracy.

Former Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, who was ousted in 2011 over a botched effort to hold a referendum on Greece's bailout, has announced the creation of a new political party, dubbed Movement for Change. Its policies are expected to be social democrat, similar to those of PASOK, part of the current ruling coalition.
