On 20 Dec 1812, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, determined to preserve Germanic folk tales, published the first volume of stories they had collected. A Google search on Grimm's Fairy Tales turns up nearly 73 million results, attesting to the enduring ability of the 211 Grimm stories to bewitch young readers. Many classics in the 211-story collection, which include Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, portrayed life as cruel and capricious and had an unhappy ending. Walt Disney and many other sought to "fix" the stories. A special 200th anniversary translation is going back to the original to remove the varnish.

Other classics include Little Red Riding Hood, Rumpelstiltskin, Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel, The Three Little Pigs, The Little Mermaid and The Frog Prince.

The translator of the Taschen 200th anniversary edition of The Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm, Matthew Price, and editor Noel Daniel, mean to lessen "the weight of centuries of cultural and linguistic development" on the stories. They note that the Brothers Grimm could not have anticipated the cultural reach of their academic pursuits when they set out to commit these centuries-old oral traditions from the various regions of a not yet unified Germany to paper. Price anticipates that readers could be shocked at the unvarnished version of the stories.

Hollywood is in midst of rediscovering the Grimm tales. At least two of the year's movies represent revisionist takes on Grimm classics. Some of the attraction of the tales is that they are so old, copyrights don't have to be considered. (WRITTEN Jan 2012)
