Geneva II Meeting on Syria

January 22, 2014 - UNITED NATIONS

The United Nations, Russia and the United States will convene with Syrian representatives for a meeting dubbed Geneva II at the United Nations in Geneva on 22 Jan 2014.

Other participants will be announced along the way, and could include Iran. The sticking points, which include the future of President Bashir al-Assad, appear too numerous to count.

Nonetheless, the stated goal is the "establishment, by mutual consent, of a transitional governing body with full executive powers, including over military and security entities." The statement notes that the war has already left well over 100,000 people dead, displaced almost 9 million others, and caused upheaval in the region.
