ENGLAND 13 Jun 2013 Duchess of Cambridge to christen liner. A turning point?

Following tradition, the Duchess of Cambridge, the expectant wife of Prince William, will launch the newest liner of Princess Cruises. It makes its maiden voyage on Jun 16. Princess Diana, Audrey Hepburn and Sophia Loren christened the company's liners before her. The christening of the Princess Royal at Southampton looms at a possible turning point for the stricken cruise industry and the countdown to the duchess' new life as a mother. The former Kate Middleton and the godmother-to-be of a liner, she is due to give birth in July.

The cruise industry has had a tough year. A Harris Interactive poll reported by the Chicago Times in April notes that 53 per cent of the 2,230 adults surveyed in the United States said they were less likely to take a cruise than they were a year earlier. No doubt impacted by the string of stories about stricken cruise ship passengers and the plethora of news photos of the Costa Concordia on its side on a reef off the Italian coast, just 35 per cent of the respondents in the poll said they view cruises as "worry-free" vacations. Half said they perceived air travel as "much safer" than cruises.

The official ceremony will involve a blessing of the 3600-passenger liner, the celebratory tradition of smashing a bottle over the hull of the ship and a performance by the Royal Marines Band and the pipers of the Irish Guards. Features of the new ship include a top-deck, glass-bottomed walkway extending 28 feet beyond the edge of the ship, the largest pastry shop at sea and balconies on all outside staterooms. Deck seven will feature Princess Live!, a 280-seat entertainment area with studio and café space for musical performances, television broadcasts and other events. (WRITTEN APR 2013)
