The highlight of Scotland's annual cultural extravaganza is the Edinburgh International Festival (EIF). In 2013, the star turn of the EIF is a futuristic play set on a new version of Earth. "Leaving Planet Earth," staged in a vast sports complex on the outskirts of the capital, will be one of many shows to deploy the latest technology as part of a wider theme. According to the organizers, the program will be packed full of science fiction, film, and rock & roll elements. How artists have embraced and adopted new technology will be celebrated in work going back hundreds of years from the likes of Beethoven, Shakespeare, Leonardo da Vinci and Samuel Beckett.

The festival draws thousands of music, opera, theater and dance performers from all over the world. The Scotsman newspaper reports that two of China's best-known heavy metal bands are included in the music line-up, and one of the country's most popular actors, Pu Cunxin, will perform at the Playhouse in a new version of Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Coriolanus. Judith Doherty, the artistic director of Grid Iron, which is presenting "Leaving Planet Earth," told the newspaper that the performance has been in development for almost three years.

The capital's other seven festivals are the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Edinburgh International Book Festival, International Film Festival, the Jazz and Blues Festival, Edinburgh Art Festival, the Military Tattoo, Mela Festival and International Science Festival. (WRITTEN MAR 2013)
