Every year thousands of performers take to a multitude of stages all over Scotland's capital to present shows for every taste for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. One of the capital's famous annual festivals, the Fringe features off-beat shows that include standup comedy, magic performances and cabarets. It functions as a low-brow and informal version of its famous cousin, the Edinburgh International Festival (EIF), which opens Aug 9. On occasion, the Fringe makes room for serious issues, and a highlight of 2013 is a political play based on actual signs created for the Occupy Oakland movement in the United States. Fringe organizers describe it as riveting theatre, with 14 monologues that retell the stories of the Oakland activists.

The Fringe started with a handful of EIF gatecrashers in 1947. Year on year, more and more performers followed their example and in 1958 the Festival Fringe Society was created in response to the success of the trend. In 2011, the Fringe drew 1,877,119 million visitors, according to the organizers, becoming the largest festival of its kind in the world.

The capital's six other festivals are the Edinburgh International Book Festival, International Film Festival, the Jazz and Blues Festival, Edinburgh Art Festival, the Military Tattoo and Mela Festival, International Science Festival. (WRITTEN MAR 2013)
