BUENOS AIRES 7 Sep 2013 OIC Session decides host of 2020 Summer Games
President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner is likely to be greeting foreign leaders ahead of the Olympic International Committee Session on Sep 7, but their visit to the Casa Rosada will be no more than a formality. The leaders of countries with cities bidding to host the 2020 Summer Olympics, they will be in Buenos Aires to add heft to their city's bid and to mingle with members of the OIC general assembly before the voting begins. For Argentina, the September OIC session is three months too late.

The bidding cities--three or four, if the pattern holds--represent the shortlist decided on at the IOC Session in May 2012. There are five starters for the 2020 Games: Doha, Baku, Istanbul, Madrid and Tokyo.

Argentina wants to host the Argentina wants to host the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics. But for the fact that the host of the 2018 youth Olympics will be decided in Jun 2013, three months ahead of the IOC session in Buenos Aires, President Fernández de Kirchner's mingling with the IOC members in September might have yielded a win.

The inaugural Youth Olympic Games, a pet project of IOC President Jacques Rogge, were held in Singapore in 2010, with the inaugural Winter Youth Olympics in the Austrian city of Innsbruck from 13-22 Jan 2012. They will be held every four years, in staggered summer and winter events consistent with the current Olympic Games format, for athletes between 14 to 18.

Argentina's rivals for the Youth Games include: Monterrey, Mexico; Medellin, Colombia; Abuja, Nigeria; and Kaspiysk, Russia. The shortlist will be announced in Jan 2013, with the winner announced in Lausanne in Jun 2013 during the 2020 IOC members' information briefing. (WRITTEN FEB 2012)
