Berlin Zoological Garden takes delivery of a bronze statue of polar bear Knut as a cub, a point in his short life when his celebrity was greatest. He had millions of fans around the world and a Facebook page. The statue can be counted on to revive a little "Knutmania," which waned when Knut became an adult and looked like the other bears in the enclosure. Knut's sudden death at the zoo in Mar 2011 revived the mania for a time, with many paying tribute to the bear on social media.
The lifelike bronze Knut, captured as a 3-4 month cub, is 4-feet-7-inches long and 3-feet-9-inchs high. He rests on an ice floe made of white-gray granite. The head rests on his left paw; his right paw hangs over the edge of the imitation ice. "He is dreaming and reflecting," said artist Josef Tabachnyk in a report by Germany Info in August.

Knut was born in at the zoo on 5 Dec 2006, the first polar bear cub to be born in Berlin Zoo in 30 years. Knut and a twin brother were rejected by their mother, a former East German circus bear, at birth. The twin brother died four days later. Knut spent his first 44 days in an incubator, and was raised by a zookeeper who bottle-fed him and taught him to swim.

Animal rights groups criticized the institution for forcing him to live in such a small space, and when he died, they blamed the conditions of his captivity for the early and sudden death. (WRITTEN AUG 2012)
