BERLIN 28 Oct 2012 German capital celebrates 775th birthday

Berlin celebrates its 775th birthday in 2012 with exhibitions, urban installations, guided tours and other events starting in August. The official celebration will be held Oct 28 in St. Nicholas Church, which was built in the 13th Century then rebuilt after World War II.

The theme of the celebrations is the city's medieval roots and long history, but there is little to see that predates the Second World War.

A BBC history of the war notes that Stalin's attempt to take Berlin ahead of his allies in 1945 led to one of the most intense battles in human history. Millions of shells were fired into a city that was already devastated after two years of relentless bombing raids by British and American warplanes.

The Church of St. Nicholas didn't escape the bombing. The East German Democratic Republic authorized the rebuilding of the church in 1981, using old designs and plans, and it reopened in the unified Germany in 2010. As seen today, it is largely a reconstruction. The church serves mainly as a museum and occasionally as a concert venue. It is renowned for its acoustics and the rebuilt church has been equipped with a set of 41 bells.

One comprehensive history of the city notes that almost no other metropolis has experienced such frequent, radical change transforming the face of the city. After the War, the changes wrought by reunification rank as the most dramatic.

Other birthday events include a city party on Oct 28 in Nikolai district, which represents the cradle of Berlin. The "Lange Nacht der Museen" (Long Night of the Museums) on Aug 25 will also celebrate the city's history, and there will be an open day for visiting the city's monuments on Sep 8 and 9.
