Aug 3 opens a required window for federal parliamentary elections, and Nov 30 closes it. Late October is seen as probable. Whenever the vote occurs, it will see the conservative opposition Liberal coalition fighting to unseat the governing center-left Labour Party. In the 2010 election, neither party won enough seats in the 150-seat House of Representatives to govern without partners. Leading a minority government and with several tax policies and reforms that affect the giant mining and banking sectors, Gillard is seen as vulnerable. She plans to fight for a second term with a technology playbook borrowed from US President Barak Obama, who won re-election in Nov 2012. The 43rd Parliament is due to expire on 27 Sep 2013.

A Nielsen Poll published by Australian broadcaster ABC in Sep 2011 sees the conservatives snatching victory from Labour, but two years in politics can tip any balance. Gillard has sent her staff to study and adapt strategies from the Obama's re-election campaign. Her rival, opposition leader Tony Abbot, is also reported to be studying the Obama campaign, in which new technologies like big data proved their worth with both sides turning to social media.

The 2010 election came two months after Gillard ousted her predecessor, Kevin Rudd, in a controversial Labor leadership challenge. Following the vote, Gillard's minority government pulled together 72 members from her own Labor party, one Greens MP and three independents with differing priorities. The Australian newspaper notes that her position will be strengthened if she and Rudd can set aside their animosity for a show of unity before the 2013 vote. The newspaper recently highlighted the reconciliation between Abbott and former opposition leader, Malcolm Turnbull, as a potential boost for opposition chances.

Issues in play include the government's carbon tax, mining tax and asylum-seeker policies.

Voting is compulsory in Australia, which has 14 million registered voters. (WRITTEN NOV 2012)
