ALBANIA 28 Nov 2012 Albania celebrates 100 years of independence

Albania, dominated for most of its history by one or another foreign power, freed itself from Ottoman Empire control 100 years ago with the Vlorë Proclamation. It will celebrate its centenary of independence on Nov 28, and admission to the club of European Union candidates is likely to be one of its first gifts. The body of the country's only post-independence monarch, King Zog I, will be shipped back from France for a ceremonial burial on Nov 17, the start of the centenary events.

Albania, dominated for most of its history by one or another foreign power, freed itself from Ottoman Empire control 100 years ago with the Vlorë Proclamation. It will celebrate its centenary of independence on Nov 28, and admission to the club of European Union candidates is likely to be one of its first gifts. The body of the country's only post-independence monarch, King Zog I, will be shipped back from France for a ceremonial burial on Nov 17, the start of the centenary events.

In October, the European Commission recommended that the European Council grant Albania the status of candidate country. Conditions - key judicial and public administration reforms -- are attached to the candidacy. The candidates' club includes: Turkey; Macedonia; Montenegro; Iceland and Serbia. Croatia which will be admitted as the 28th member in July. Albania's inclusion marks a significant milestone for a country that was one of Europe's most isolated when it emerged from communism some 20 years ago.

Zog ruled Albania from 1925 until 1939. He started out as president, but in 1928 proclaimed a constitutional monarchy and was crowned king of the Albanians. He fled the country in 1939 after Italy invaded, and he died in exile in France in 1961. (WRITTEN OCT 2012)
