The sixth World Telecommunication Development Conference, from 31 Mar to 11 Apr 2014 in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, aims to identify priorities in the development of telecommunications and information and communication technologies.
The Sharm el-Sheikh developments and decisions will contribute to the agenda of the important quadrennial plenipotentiary conference of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) of the United Nations in Nov 2014. The agenda at both meetings will take in issues as diverse as e-health, radio frequencies and satellite orbits, but the festering argument about control and management of the Internet could sour the climate for consensus. Washington has been expending considerable diplomatic capital to safeguard its present level of governance, but holds a weaker hand after the furor that followed revelations in Jun 2013 about cyber spying by the United States National Security Agency.
