The 65th International Astronautical Congress 2014 convenes in Toronto from 29 Sep to 3 Oct 2014.
The theme of the event billed as the world's premier space event - the 64th Congress was held in China and the 63rd in Italy -- offers Canada to show off its expertise in the field. The host, the Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute (CASI), notes that Canada is "punching above its weight" with its relatively small Space sector. The sector's specialties include communications and Earth observation satellites, Space robotics, Space medicine, tele-medicine, tele-education and Space hardware. The congress theme, "Our World Needs Space," covers the relationship between Earth and Space, and aims to focus attention on the need for sustainable efforts in universal access to water. Guy Laliberté, the founder of Cirque du Soleil and Canada's first private explorer in space, will be on hand to promote the mission of the organization he set up in 2007 to address water sustainability, the One Drop Foundation.
