The Titanic sank on maiden voyage 100 years ago

The Titanic, one of the largest and most luxurious passenger ships of its time, sank on its maiden voyage in 1912, killing some 1,500 passengers and crew. Time has not diminished the status of the sinking as one of the most famous tragedies in modern history. It has inspired speculation, studies, a law, stories, films and a musical. The approach of the centenary can be expected to generate more of the same, and in 2009, one company is already booking passengers for an Apr 2012 memorial cruise to the site.
